10 Outerwear Patterns to Style Your Dresses & Skirts
Coats, jackets, and bonus layering pieces curated to pair beautifully with long-sleeve dresses this winter.
Long-sleeve dresses are a staple for every wardrobe, offering comfort, style, and practicality in any season. However, wearing dresses or skirts in the cooler months is not the easiest. You've probably asked yourself "How will I stay warm?" or "What type of coat should I wear with it?". To help you create the perfect outfit, I've rounded-up 10 beautiful & on-trend sewing patterns that pair seamlessly with long dresses & skirts such as my Harvest Moon Dress or Augusta Skirt patterns ❤️
Coats

1. The Traveller Coat by Bella Loves Patterns
This timeless design is perfect for wearing with flowy and oversize dresses since it has a roomy fit that will allow for easy layering. You'll be able to wear a chunky knit underneath without feeling restricted.

2. The Carmen Coat by Sycamore Road Patterns
If like me you love a good raglan sleeve then this is the coat for you. It is an oversized, double breasted coat that will go perfectly with mini or midi length dresses.

3. The Hayden Coat by Viki Sews
Another raglan sleeve coat but with a beautiful turn-down collar and ankle length, perfect to wear with your favorite maxi winter dress.

4. The Sanda Coat by Merchant & Mills
I love this versatile coat/jacket pattern because of its oversized, dropped shoulders style and cute rolled collar. For Winter, I'd make it in a boucle wool.

5. The Indigo Coat by Seamwork
This classic car coat would be perfect if you're in need of a light coat for transitional seasons (or if you live in warm climate). Because of its shorter length I'd pair it with the mini version of my Harvest Moon dress.
Jackets

6. The Kaia Double-Faced Coat by Bella Loves Patterns
Kaia is a mid-season short coat that would go perfectly with a long flowy skirt to balance the silhouette. Its bal collar and dropped shoulders create a balanced casual but elegant look.

7. The Ren Jacket by The Ordinary Folks
A beautiful Peter Pan Collar (optional) quilted jacket, perfect for mid-seasons or layering in the winter. It would look great with a short or long dress. Plus it comes with a matching kid version. How cute!

8. The Luna Jacket by Puff and Pencil
This Luna jacket comes in 2 different lengths and has beautiful bell sleeves with wide cuffs.

9. The Wren Jacket by Style Arc
I had to include the trendy scarf jacket I'm seeing all over the Internet lately. It looks so cozy and would look great with dresses of any lengths.

10. The Rue Quilt Coat by Spaghetti Western Sewing
A retro-inspired quilted jacket with a big turned collar and big patch pockets. Looks so cosy.

Bonus: Three Layering Pieces
Make these three patterns to add layers to your winter outfit.

The Ruby Vest by Sydney Graham
A staple in any wardrobe, this cute quilted vest is perfect to wear layered between your dress and coat. Make it with wool to be extra warm.

The Honeygirl Tee by Paradise Patterns
An absolute essential, I already made 2 of these long sleeve pointelle tees for myself. The scoop and crew necklines that are included in the pattern would allow you to pair it with any type of dress you have on rotation this Winter.

The Willamina Collar by Merchant & Mills
A detachable tie-on collar, the Willamina is perfect to add warmth and a je-ne-sais-quoi to your Winter outfits.
